Additional Task 3: Media Competences after year 12

Students should have achieved several competences according media after year 12. According to the Hessian Curriculum, general goals of the English lessons is, in the section of media competence, “the usage of libraries and centers of documentation and the usage of modern information technologies in lessons and further: e-mail, internet-research, use of data in the internet; critical handling of media” (Hessian Curriculum 3). Also projects with the use of the internet and as new media is essential in the students future careers, the presentation of their own creativity and the contact with English-speaking countries. 

But not only new media, but media in general is necessary in foreign language classes. Especially through audio-visual media, the students can have a better access to the culture and language of the countries that are dealt with. In the higher classes, media criticism becomes an issue of foreign language teaching. Besides the skills and competences already mentioned, the students should be able to present the results of their work through computer programs, but also on the black board or on transparencies or other media.

At the end of class 12, the students, as mentioned before in the curriculum, should be able to use modern technologies such as the internet and to present their work results self-contained with supporting medial presentations.

This all sounds very theoretical. It means that students should be able to research effectively on the internet and creating appropriate. The students have to be able to deal with media critically and evaluate the sources found online and questioning them, according to their reliability.

Also students should be able to deal with social networking probably and should know about the dangers on the internet, as well as copyright issues and other legal offences they can commit on the internet, as downloading.

Basic skills in text processing and presentation programs should be achieved and also the creation of a website with a program or an editor.

And finally one of the most important skills is the knowledge of when not to use media, so that topics are not overwhelmed by a medial overkill.
