Additional Task 2: Drama and Media

Picture
Drama and Media seem to be two elements that have not much in common. But in modern drama and modern school theatre, media has become a very important element.

On stage, media can be used in very different ways. It is possible to use a projector and show pictures and films during the stage performance. Also, TV’s can be used on stage and integrated into the play or performance.

The use of drama and media in school is manifold. First of all, the traditional film is a product of media and drama. When showing a film to students, a dramatic performance is presented through media. The students can analyze the dramatic structure of the film and see how the certain aspects of film are used, for example camera movements, perspectives and angles. The film shows a very wide range of possibilities to use in the foreign language classroom. Besides the connection between dramatic performance and media, it can transfer authentic language and cultural aspects to the students.

But not only watching a film, but producing a film on their own can develop certain media skills. Students can, in a project in class or a study group, develop their own dramatic script, can act in front of the camera and then have to cut the film and put it together as one work.

Example from the Seminar “Der Film im Unterricht” at Philipps-University Marburg

In this way, students have a direct combination of the two fields in a medium they are familiar with. Another method when teaching foreign languages is the element of drama itself, supported by medial influences. This can be music, pictures or videos to underline the story of the play. Besides the traditional media, as music for example, it is possible to use a projector for pictures and videos, not online to support the play, but to present different elements. For instance, the background of a play can be put on screen, as a house or a landscape, but also different forms, signs or bodies can be used, programmed by a special tool or program to move in a certain way.

These elements can be very helpful for modern school theatre performances and teachers should know about dramatic performance in combination with media. Further education for teachers is possible in that field. All the information can be found here.
